Study in China: The Complete Guide

China combines world-ranked universities, serious scholarship funding (many students study tuition-free on CSC or provincial scholarships), and unmatched exposure to the world's second-largest economy. Programs on this site range from full English-taught degrees to short study tours.

Why students choose China

Chinese universities climb global rankings every year, and hundreds of degree programs, including engineering, medicine, business, and computer science, are taught fully in English. For career purposes, first-hand China experience plus even basic Mandarin is a genuine differentiator in trade, manufacturing, logistics and tech.

China is also one of the few destinations where fully funded study is realistic at scale: the Chinese Government Scholarship (CSC), Confucius Institute scholarships, and provincial/university awards can cover tuition, accommodation and a monthly stipend.

Tuition and scholarships

Self-funded tuition typically runs RMB 20,000–40,000 (~US$2,800–5,600) per year for most English-taught bachelor's and master's programs; MBBS programs run roughly RMB 30,000–45,000 per year. Scholarship applications generally open November–March for the September intake; apply early, as the strongest awards (CSC Type A via embassies) close first.

Short-term study tours and camps listed on this site are priced in USD for durations of a few days to several weeks and don't require the full degree admission process.

Cost of living

University dormitories cost roughly RMB 800–1,500 per month in most cities. Total monthly budgets: around US$350–500 in second-tier cities, US$500–800 in Beijing or Shanghai. Campus canteens keep food costs very low, and mobile payment makes daily life cashless; set up Alipay/WeChat Pay on arrival.

Admission and timeline

Main intake is September, with applications typically due February–June (earlier for scholarships). Standard documents: passport, certificates and transcripts, a study plan or personal statement, and for many programs proof of English (IELTS 6.0+/TOEFL) or Chinese (HSK 4+ for Chinese-taught programs). Some universities interview online. After admission you receive the JW201/JW202 form needed for the visa.

Visa (X1/X2)

Degree students apply for an X1 visa (studies over 180 days) with the admission letter and JW form, then convert it to a residence permit within 30 days of arrival. Short programs under 180 days use the X2 visa. Processing is usually straightforward once university documents are in hand.

Working during and after studies

Students may take part-time work or internships only with approval from their university and the exit-entry administration; unauthorized work risks visa cancellation, so always get the permission stamp. After graduation, a work (Z) visa normally requires two years of work experience, though several cities and free-trade zones waive this for graduates of Chinese universities.

Frequently asked questions about studying in China

Can I really study in China for free?

Yes: the Chinese Government Scholarship (CSC), Confucius Institute and many provincial/university scholarships cover tuition and often housing plus a monthly stipend. They are competitive: apply between November and March with strong academics and a clear study plan.

Do I need to speak Chinese?

Not for English-taught programs, which include most options on this site. Chinese-taught programs require HSK 4 or higher. Either way, learning basic Mandarin dramatically improves daily life and job prospects.

Is Chinese MBBS recognized abroad?

Many Chinese medical universities are listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools and accepted by licensing bodies in numerous countries, but rules differ; confirm with the medical council where you intend to practice before enrolling.
